Shopping for Home Care
Questions to Ask
  • Does the agency have a consumer-driven approach?  Are they willing to arrange dates and times based on your schedule, not theirs? 

  • Will the Caregiver perform personal care activities like bathing and dressing (not simply handing the client soap or an adult brief)?

  • Will the Caregiver drive the Client to appointments?

  • Will the company quote rates over the telephone?

  • Are the rates affordable?

  • Does the agency offer a discounted, daily rate, or merely charge the    hourly rate multiplied by 24 hrs

  • Are all fees disclosed (e.g., an extra, hidden charge for light housekeeping)?

  • Does the agency require the client to lock-in to a long-term contract?

  • Will the office staff make a free initial home visit to ascertain your needs?

  • Will you get ongoing (at least monthly) phone calls to make sure you are satisfied with your service?

  • Will you receive free ongoing home visits?

  • Are the Caregivers paid competitively so the agency can attract the best Caregivers in the industry?

  • Does the agency conduct behavioral-based Caregiver interviews before referral (not simply orient applicants who register)?

  • Does the agency conduct reference checks (rather than “contact”  references for dates of employment)?

  • Does the agency conduct criminal background checks?

  • Does the agency conduct health screenings and/or TB tests?

  • Does the agency check identity documents and ensure that the Caregiver is eligible to work in the US?

  • Does the agency receive corporate oversight or have another external quality review process in place to ensure adherence to quality standards?
  • Is the agency responsive?  Can they find a Caregiver who meets your unique service needs?
